Chaga - properties

Click the links below for brief descriptions of Chaga's properties*. For a very extensive background check this monograph.

  • • Normalizes the immune system

A unique property of all medicinal mushrooms is immune modulation: these extracts will boost and stimulate our resistance against diseases, but only when needed (during fatigue and stress, both physical and mental, at the change of seasons, when recovering from unusual physical activities, and so on) and only as much as is necessary.

They will also neutralize overstimulation (a potential side effect of some powerful pharmaceuticals) and exhaustion and decline of our immune system. These things can happen when you experience prolonged mental or physical stress (and no time to recover) and when aging - many old age-related diseases can be contributed to the steady decline of the immune system, after 50. In short, medicinal mushrooms support and balance our immune system and turn our bodies into a hostile environment for all pathogens, protecting it from infections, viruses and inflammations, triggering the immune system to operate at the top of its potential at all times.

Two terms are applicable here: adaptogenic (helping us to adapt to the never-ending assaults on our health) and BRM (a natural Biological Response Modifier - stimulating the body's natural defense mechanisms without any side effects). Medicinal mushrooms do not heal, they help the body to heal itself.

Some people have the idea one should avoid mushrooms in case of fungal infections like candida. This is not true, in fact it's the opposite. Have a look at this blog where someone suffering from Candida infection used Chaga to finally cure herself.
  • • Anti-inflammatory, anti-viral

These properties are directly linked to the immune supporting properties. Responsible for these immune supporting properties are mainly the polysaccharides present in Chaga. Harmful micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses will be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause infections and inflammations. Existing infections etc. will last considerably shorter due to the immune system functioning at its peak level. Apart from that, betulinic acid (an important component of Chaga) is currently being researched for its anti-HIV properties. For additional information visit our 'resources' page.

Oriveda Chaga contains over 50% of polysaccharides (39% of which are ß-D-glucans) and over 1.5% of betulinic acid.

  • • Anti-ulcer, anti-gastritis properties

In folk medicine Chaga was used often to treat gastritis and related gastrointestinal problems. Again, the immune support of Chaga plays an important role here, both in treating and prevention of these problems, but betulinic acid and the phytosterols present in Chaga also play a role. Stress e.g. can have a devastating effect on the metabolism, and is known to contribute to the development of ulcers because of its negative effect on the immune system. Most ulcers are caused by bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. A well functioning immune system will be able to deal with this pathogen. Chaga will make sure your immune system will be operating at its optimal level at all times.
  • • Anti-cancer adjuvant - decreases the side effects of chemo-therapy and other aggressive medication

Chaga has proven to be very effective in supporting standard cancer treatments such as chemo-therapy and radiation. It can compensate the devastating effect these treatments can have on the immune system (causing side effects like nausea, insomnia, poor appetite, fatigue, etc. - these side effects are often the result of a compromized immune function.) it helps preventing metastasis (cancer cells traveling through the bloodstream should be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause harm). Chaga can significantly contribute to the quality of life during and after treatment this way.
Furthermore, research indicates that Chaga itself also has anti-cancer potential. The betulinic acid and some of the phytosterols present showed the ability to kill cancer cells directly. How this works exactly is the subject of several theories. So Chaga has both an indirect (by stimulating the immune system to battle cancer-cells) and direct (by causing apoptosis [=programmed cell death]) effect during cancer treatments.
  • • Anti-oxidant properties, revitalizing, anti-aging

Our ORIVEDA extract includes the sclerotium ( the black outside layer ) of the Chaga. This is important, because this sclerotium contains a massive amount of a specific fungi-melanin, giving our extract a very high level of anti-oxidants and turning it into a powerful anti-aging tool. Research showed DNA-regenerating and re-vitalizing properties. The whole body will benefit from this; you will look better (skin and hair) and your organs will function better. Some of our customers reported an anti-balding effect.
Antioxidant power is often expressed in an ORAC-value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).

The ORAC-value Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued by Brunswick Labs indicates 146,700 µmole TE p/100 grams, putting our Chaga extract in the top 10 of anti-oxidants right away. As far as we know it's also the highest level ever found in a Chaga product. The COA is available on request.

Check this graph for a comparison with other 'super-foods'.

  • • Normalizes cholesterollevels, beneficial for the cardiovascular system, supports a normal bloodpressure

Research showed betulinic acid (a compound unique to Chaga) to be able to break down 'bad' cholesterol in the bloodstream (6 - 8 caps p/day, already effective after 10 days - reported to us by one of our customers). Besides that the ß-glucans, part of the polysaccharides in Chaga also appear to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. By normalizing those levels Chaga also contributes to lowering high blood pressure and promotes a healthy cardio-vascular system: less plaque, stronger arteries.
Oriveda Chaga contains ≥ 1.5% of betulinic acid.
  • • Effective against psoriasis

Psoriasis is basically an auto-immune disease. In the early 70s a case study was performed in the USSR, investigating the effect of a traditional Chaga preparation (Befungin ®) on psoriasis. The outcome was excellent.
Fifty people were involved, 14 women and 36 men, aged between 6 - 55. The majority were suffering from serious psoriasis for over 10 years. The therapeutic effect of the Chaga manifested itself after 2 - 3 months. Continued intake led to complete dissapearance of the psoriatic rashes. Only 4 patients did not benefit from Chaga, but this was probably because of severe alcohol abuse and not following the instructions. The Chaga intake should be continued for the rest of their lives, because rashes would reappear when the intake was concelled.
Befungin ® is a Russian preparation based on Chaga, originating from the 50s. Modern Chaga extracts are much more powerful and more easy to administer. Three times two capsules of the Oriveda extract per day will do. After the first results are obvious, one can experiment with the dosage and find the perfect balance. After all, every person is different. The full article describing this case study is available for download in our 'resources' section.
  • • No side effects, some contra indications

Chaga extracts have no side effects at all. The lack of side effects is due to the fact that Chaga extracts work for 95% in an indirect way: as a natural BRM (a Biological Response Modifier - stimulating the body's natural defense mechanisms). Chaga is stimulating the body to heal itself. So there is no potential disturbance of the body's chemical and hormonal balance. This makes medicinal mushrooms extracts like Chaga the ideal preventive medicine for everybody.

The only contra-indications are immune suppressing medicines (e.g. after a transplant). Never use medicinal mushroom extracts together with this type of medication - the immune modulating effect might neutralize its workings. There are also reports that Chaga extracts might increase the risk of hypoglycemia (blood sugar levels that fall too low) in people that are sensitive for that, such as those taking diabetes medicines like insulin. In case you want to take Chaga no matter what, it's best to start with a very low dose and slowly increase that, while monitoring potential unwanted effects.

Harmful micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses will be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause infections and inflammations. Existing infections etc. will last considerably shorter due to the immune system functioning at its peak level.

Research showed ABM extract to be very effective in inhibiting the infectivity of the common Herpes Simplex virus (HSV-1 - over 75% decrease) and the Bovine Herpes virus (BoHV-1 - over 51% decrease). For additional information visit our 'research' section.

Oriveda ABM contains over 60% of polysaccharides (at least 64% of these are beta-D-glucans).

  • • Positive effect on high cholesterol-levels and high blood-pressure, potential anti-diabetic properties

ABM limits the intake of cholesterol in the digestive tract. Indirect, this can have a positive effect on high blood pressure. Apart from this, a clinical trial showed also a direct effect on high blood pressure, without any side effects.

The polysaccharides in ABM demonstrated anti-hyperglycemic (anti-diabetic), anti-hyper-triglyceridemic (lowering blood fat), anti-hyper-cholesterolemic (lowering cholesterol), and anti-arteriosclerotic (keeping the arteries flexible and young) activity.

These findings are important for diabetic patients. ABM showed great potential in normalizing blood glucose levels in those with existing diabetes, and it also may help prevent diabetes in those susceptible.
  • • Anti-cancer adjuvant - decreases the side effects of chemo-therapy and other aggressive medication

ABM has proven to be very effective in supporting standard cancer treatments such as chemo-therapy and radiation. It can compensate the devastating effect these treatments have on the immune system (causing side effects like nausea, insomnia, poor appetite, fatigue, etc. - these side effects are often the result of a compromized immune function).

It helps preventing metastasis (rogue cancer cells traveling through the bloodstream should be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause harm). ABM can significantly contribute to the quality of life during and after treatment this way.

Furthermore, research indicates that ABM itself also might have anti-cancer potential. It was found to inhibit the enzyme aromatase, which is associated with the development of breast-cancer.

Ergosterol (pro-vitamine D2) is one of the dominant phyto-sterols found in ABM. Research showed it may have anti-tumor properties. It also has anti-angiogenic properties, meaning it inhibits the formation of new blood-vessels, so cancer cells cannot develop any further. Research is on-going.
  • • Decreases the side effects of chemo-therapy and other agressive medication

Agressive pharmaceuticals can seriously affect our immune system. Dosing is often a trial and error process with at times unforeseen and unwanted side effects. These side effects are often the result of a compromized immune function. A compromized immune function can lead to infections, inflammations, metabolic disorders, etc.

This is where medicinal mushrooms like the ABM can help - they normalize the immune function when this is affected. Pharmaceuticals are not able to adapt to the body's needs the way a natural adaptogenic like ABM can. They are also taxing on the liver, the chemical filter in our body. According to animal tests ABM has good liver-protecting properties (hepatoprotective).
  • • Anti-allergic properties

The immune balancing properties of ABM are benificial for those suffering from allergies, including asthma and hayfever. Research and reports from our customers indicate ABM may prevent allergy development and can be used as a therapeutical substance against established allergy.

  • • Detoxing, liver-protective, anti-hepatitis

ABM extracts have a detoxifying and blood-purifying effect that can help rid the body of dangerous toxins and restore a healthful balance.
Furthermore, research found ABM extracts to have a significant positive effect on patients with chronic Hepatitis B and C. Studies show supplementation can also improve liver enzymes such as bilirubin, SGOT and SGPT.
  • • No side effects, one contra-indication

ABM shows no side effects at all. The lack of side effects is due to the fact that medicinal mushrooms are mostly working in an indirect way: as a natural BRM (a Biological Response Modifier - triggering the body's natural defense mechanisms when they are underperforming). They are stimulating the body to heal itself. There is no potential disturbance of the body's chemical and hormonal balance. This makes medicinal mushrooms the ideal prophylactic for everybody.

The only contra-indication are immune suppressing medicines (e.g. after a transplant). Never use medicinal mushroom extracts together with this type of medication - the immune modulating effect might neutralize its workings.

PSP - properties

Click the links below for brief descriptions of the properties of a PSP extract*. For a very extensive background check this monograph.

  • • Enhances and normalizes the human immune system. Used often during and after treatments such as chemo and radio-therapy with the following effects:
    • Detoxing
    • Hepatoprotective
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Anti-viral
    • Improves symptoms of weakness, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, insomnia , anxiety, pain, night sweat etc.

A unique property of all medicinal mushrooms is immune modulation. Coriolus PSP has been investigated in particular as an adjuvant during cancer therapy (chemo, radiation) and several clinical trials showed the effects mentioned above. The quality of life of patients during and after treatment improved significantly. For details, please check this pdf or go to our research page for more publications.

A quote from this research report: "[...] these individuals report feeling improvement in their general condition, appetite, energy level, and ability to digest food. As a biological response modifier, PSP may help them to improve or maintain their immune status while decreasing the severity of the side effects associated with chemo-therapy and radiation. Its safety profile also makes it an ideal adjunct therapy to help in the treatment of cancer."

Apart from this specific application Coriolus PSP is also an excellent general immune supporter that will help you to gain and maintain good health when you experience prolonged mental or physical stress (and no time to recover) and when aging - many old age-related diseases can be contributed to the steady decline of the immune system, after 50. In short, medicinal mushrooms like Coriolus PSP support and balance our immune system and turn our bodies into a hostile environment for all pathogens, protecting it from infections, viruses and inflammations, triggering the immune system to operate at the top of its potential at all times.

  • • Improves general resistance to diseases and infections

These properties are of course part of the immune supporting properties. Responsible for these properties are mainly the beta-D-glucans, part of the polysaccharides present in Coriolus.
Harmful micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses will be neutralized by the immune system before they can cause infections and inflammations. Existing infections etc. will last considerably shorter due to the immune system functioning at peak level. For additional background visit our research-page and our FAQ-page.

Oriveda PSP-50 contains over 50% of polysaccharides (29% of which are (1>3)(1>6)ß-D-glucans)
  • • Good results have also been reported with Hepatitis C and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

In particular in SE-Asia, where Hepatitis is much more common and many people are carrier of the disease, extracts from Coriolus versicolor are used to control Hepatitis and related liver diseases. The results are good.

The immune supporting function plays a role here, but research also indicates a direct hepato-protective effect. This is one of the reasons it is used often to support standard treatments which involve powerful medicines with potential liver-damaging side effects, like chemo-therapy.
  • • No side effects, some contra indications

Coriolus PSP shows no side effects at all. The lack of side effects is due to the fact that mushrooms like the Coriolus do work for 95% in an indirect way: as a natural BRM (a Biological Response Modifier - stimulating the body's natural defense mechanisms). These extracts are stimulating the body to heal itself. So there is no potential disturbance of the body's chemical and hormonal balance. This makes medicinal mushrooms like Coriolus an ideal prophylatic for everybody.

The only contra-indication are immune suppressing medicines (e.g. after a transplant). Never use medicinal mushroom extracts together with this type of medication - the immune modulating effect might neutralize its workings.

Reishi - properties

Click the links below for brief descriptions of Reishi's properties*. For a very extensive background check this monograph.

  • • Immunomodulation

Many Reishi products on the market are labeled or promoted as immunomodulating agents and there is considerable research-based evidence to support these claims. Autoimmune diseases like allergies and arthritis can be influenced in a positive way, by normalising the immune response that caused them. Anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial effects are also an effect of a well-functioning immune system.

Some research also found that Reishi has an anti-histamine effect, which can be beneficial when treating asthma and specific allergies.

Summarising in brief: the proliferation, maturation and activities of both T and B lympocytes, NK cells and dendritic cells improved significantly during both lab and animal tests. Cytokine production was also triggered.

All of these are key factors in a well functioning immune system and therefore key factors for our general health and well-being. Taking into account that our immune system is under continuous siege and that, apart from that, our immune function starts declining already around our 35th birthday an immunesupporting supplement such as Reishi can be considered a good addition to our diet.

The beta-glucan fractions are the most important constituents for immune support. ORIVeDA's Reishi Primo is the world's most pure Reishi extract with guaranteed at least 27% of bio-active beta-glucans (90% of the polysaccharide fraction).
  • • Cardiovascular effects, anti-cholesterol

The effect of Reishi on the cardiovascular system has been investigated in depth. The triterpenes found in Reishi were found to have a normalising effect on elevated cholesterol levels, which in turn can affect high blood pressure (by reducing the potential plaque buildup in arteries). Several reports also mention a direct normalising effect on blood pressure.

Platelet aggregation decreased, probably because of the presence of trace amounts of adenosine in synergy with triterpenes. Direct and indirect lipid peroxidation (a side effect of normalised cholesterol levels) and anti-oxidant effects have been demonstrated in both animal and lab experiments.
  • • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)

CFS is also known as ME. It is believed that ME is an auto-immune disease.

A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in China. A Reishi extract was administered for 8 weeks, resulting in a reduced sense of fatigue and improved quality of life. This again confirms Reishi's effect on the immune system.

Because the effect is balancing, there are no unwanted side effects.
  • • Anti-viral and anti-bacterial actions

Polysaccharide-bound proteins (glycoproteins, comparable to the PSK and PSP fractions in Coriolus versicolor) from Reishi showed inhibitory effects on Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1), Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2), and Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV - New Jersey strain) in a lab test. Using the plaque reduction method, a significant inhibitory effect was seen at doses that showed no cytotoxicity.

A dried hot water extract of Reishi taken orally was used as the sole treatment for post-herpetic (varicella zoster virus) neuralgia in 4 elderly patients. This treatment was reported to dramatically decrease pain and promote the healing of lesions without any toxicity, even at very high doses.

The antimicrobial combination of Reishi with four commonly used antibiotics resulted in an additive or synergistic effect in most, but not all, instances, with apparent antagonism against cefazolin and ampicillin effects on Proteus vulgaris (known to cause urinary tract infections and wound infections).
  • • Anti-diabetic effects

It seems that polysaccharide-rich extracts can be benificial for diabetics. In several controlled animal studies the oral administration of a hot water extract was found to lower serum glucose levels. The first effects were seen after one week. The extract markedly reduced levels of phosphoenol-pyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK).

Serum insulin levels increased (when compared to the nontreated diabetic group) and glucose levels decreased in a dose-dependent way. Levels of non-enzymic and enzymic anti-oxidants increased and lipid peroxidation levels decreased. Therefore, in addition to its glycemic modulation, treatment with this hot water extract helped to decrease oxidative stress.

There are a few human trials with similar positive results. Overall, the data from several studies suggests that taking a Reishi extract might help in modulating blood glucose levels. However, these studies were performed mostly in animals. More support from well-planned human clinical studies is needed with and without combination with conventional medicines to be able to make more definitive claims.
  • • Liver protection, Ulcers

Triterpenes are mainly responsible for the hepato-protective effects, but some studies also show polysaccharide extracts to be benificial. A dual extract, again, would therefore be the best choice. Several studies (including some with human volunteers) show a positive effect on chronic hepatitis B.

Reishi polysaccharide extracts were also found to accelerate the healing of ulcers; up to 56%, depending on the dosage. The Helicobacter Pylori, the bacteria that causes e.g. peptic ulcers and gastritis (and is probably also involved in the development of stomach cancers) was inhibited in its growth by a Reishi extract.

As far as we know all research in this field has been performed with animals or it the lab, though. No controlled trials with humans exist as far as we know. Research was performed with ethanol and/or hot water extracts, which were administered orally.
  • • Anti-cancer adjuvant

Reishi extracts are popular supplements taken by cancer patients along with conventional therapies, to reduce the side effects of those therapies (including the negative effects on the immunefunction, which can lead to secondary infections and indirectly can promote metastasis). The chemopreventive activities of the mushroom on prostate cancer were demonstrated by a triterpenoid-rich extract of Reishi that suppressed the ventral prostate growth induced by testosterone.

Reishi appears to have a positive effect in inflammatory breast-cancer, but should not be used in hormone-related breast cancers.

However, whether the antitumor effect of Reishi is a direct one or is mediated via the immune system is not clear. The research results with humans seem to indicate that the antitumor effects are a side effect of Reishi's effects on the immune system. Much more research with human volunteers is needed - the majority of research so far was in vivo and in vitro.
  • • Side effects, contraindications

Some people taking high dosages of 1.5 - 9 grams per day reported one or more of the following side effects: temporary sleepiness, thirst, rashes, bloating, frequent urination and diarrhea. Taking the extract together with vitamin C seemed to improve many of the side effects. Lowering the dosage also helped.

These reports do not give details about the quality and properties of the extracts that were consumed. Taking into account the poor quality level of most Reishi products it is not unlikely that at least some of these side effects might be related to that, so this appears not to be a direct cause for alarm.

As said, the antimicrobial combination of Reishi with four commonly used antibiotics resulted in an additive or synergistic effect in most, but not all, instances. Reishi appears to cause cefazolin and ampicillin to be less effective against Proteus vulgaris (known to cause urinary tract infections and wound infections).

Reishi should not be used in hormone-related breast cancers.

Because Reishi has immune-balancing properties, it should not be used together with immune-suppressants, like those prescribed after a transplant. The blood sugar lowering effects can cause fatigue in those that are highly susceptible. In general these people are also very susceptible to e.g. caffeine and alcohol, or are diabetics. Taking the extract together with a sugar containing liquid can neutralise this effect.

Rare side effects are: not sleeping well, bad, vivid dreams, feelings of anxiety, and a sense of heightened mental activity. These effects are most likely caused by a genetic anomaly, like overreacting to specific triterpenes, such as lanostan.

Lanostan triggers the function of the adrenal glands, which are responsible for adrenaline/noradrenaline production. If you’re very sensitive to this you can experience hyper-activity which can make you feel anxious, etc. If you experience daily stress on top of that, this will also push the production of adrenaline/noradrenaline in your body, causing anxiety.

Reishi Primo contains a relatively high level of triterpenes; if you experience these side effects it might be better to look for a hot-water-extracted-only Reishi extract, which contains no bio-available triterpenes.

Maitake - properties

Maitake's therapeutic potential has been researched intensively since the late 1970s. Below is a list of the main targets of this research*.
Due to legal restrictions we can't give more details. Our research section has several interesting publications, free to download.

Before you start using Google for more information, read the section at the bottom: 'Why choose ORIVeDA's Grifolan ?'

  • • Maitake's anti-viral and anti-tumor potential (in vivo, in vitro and clinical tests)

  • • Maitake's cardiovascular effects

  • • The effect on the Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)

  • • General balancing of the immune system. Maitake is considered 'King of Immunity'

  • • The effect on diabetes. Maitake contains a natural alpha glucosidase inhibitor, which lowers blood sugar

  • • Blood pressure regulation

  • • Anti-cancer adjuvant - using purified Maitake extracts together with regular treatment seemed to improve the effects considerably.

  • • Side effects, contra indications (click for details)

In all the literature (and this is a lot!) no side effects or any signs of toxicity were reported. Even in very high doses no differences in heart rate, temperature, metabolism and general physical condition were found.

Because Maitake has immune-balancing properties, it should not be used together with immune-suppressants, like those prescribed after a transplant.
Maitake can cause swings in blood sugar. This can cause temporary fatigue in those that are highly susceptible. In general these people are also very susceptible to e.g. caffeine and alcohol, or are diabetics. Taking the extract together with a sugar containing liquid can neutralise this effect.
  • • Why choose ORIVeDA's Grifolan ? (click for details)

When you use Google to look for additional details on Maitake's therapeutic potential you will read about the 'D-Fraction®*', the 'MD-Fraction' and others.

The d-fraction is originally a term coined in the 1980s; it referred then to a purified -fractionated- beta-glucan, bonded with a protein; a so-called 'proteoglycan'. This particular fraction showed a lot of promise because of its anti-tumor potential.

Unfortunately, neither this product nor its successor, the md-fraction (a more pure version of the d-fraction, patented in 1997) is for sale in its undiluted pure form; the production costs are too high (it's a 200 : 1 extract) and the fractionating process is too complex for mass-production.

Although the manufacturers prefer to keep the details as vague as possible (marketing reasons), here are some -verifiable- facts:

    • Apart from being a research-term, 'D-Fraction®' is also a trademark*, registered in 1995. Products sold with the name 'D-Fraction®' contain, according to the label 'PD-Fraction®*' (which stands for 'Pre-D-Fraction'). It is unclear what this is.

    • The commercial 'D-Fraction®' has been tested against another Maitake extract, MaitakeGold 404®* (MTG), containing (according to that same test rapport and a follow-up) a diluted version of the md-fraction. The test involved many immunological parameters. MTG scored significantly better in all tests.

    • MTG is standardised for ≥ 20% (1>3)(1>6)beta-glucans (though not on the label; only in B2B communication). Nothing else.
The glucan/protein ratio is not revealed, although this would be an easy and cheap way to authenticate the product as being pure (the ratio should be between ± 2 : 1 (= d-fraction purity) all the way to 99 : 1 (= md-fraction purity) according to the patents).

    • MTG is sold only in liquid form; 1 gram of extract dissolved in 30 ml of liquid. The recommended daily dosage is 8 - 16 drops daily, which equals 19 - 77 mg MTG.
The optimal dosage of this extract is, according to independent research (a clinical trial), 7 mg/kg bodyweight/day (e.g. a 60 kg person should take ± 420mg daily), which is significantly more.

    • ORIVeDA's Grifolan is standarised for ≥ 30 % (1>3)(1>6)beta-glucans, has a glucan/protein ratio of 2.06 : 1 (similar to the original d-fraction) and can deliver the recommended daily dosage easily. Because the extract used in the research was more pure than any commercially available product, the dosage should be adjusted accordingly: we recommend 4 - 8 sachets per day (each with ≥ 300 mg beta-glucans) if maximum therapeutic potential is needed.

Summarizing, based on the known facts we feel confident ORIVeDA Grifolan® is at least equal to, if not more potent than any of the current commercially available Maitake products. Apart from that, the value for money is much better.

A 100% pure product with natural vitamin C. Vitamin C has a synergistic effect together with Maitake. It also improves the bioavailability of the bioactives.

Certified and produced in compliance with ISO 9001:2008, GMP, HACCP.

Click here for a pictorial about traditional Shilajit processing.
NB - This is NOT the way our product is being prepared!!

Shilajit • Mumijo is an extremely rare natural substance, only found in some mountain ranges like the Himalaya and the Altai mountains. Because of its rarity and its hyped reputation as a superfood and a panacea (it is one of the last remaining 'rasayana's' in Ayurveda) a lot of people smell good business opportunities.

Resulting in a lot of fake, flooding the -online- market. Like mixes of burnt sugar with propolis, Ozokerite, herbal shilajit (!?), you name it...

Let's face it, a natural substance, more rare than gold or diamonds, that takes several decades to form a layer one millimeter thick can never be available in the quantities that are currently offered online, and definitely not for low prices.

We are offering the real thing. As said, we are using a patented and time-tested method to validate the authenticity of the raw material. None of the other sellers of 'Shilajit' are doing this. Outside of Russia no scientific standard even exists to validate Shilajit, only some very diverse folk medicine practices. These are unreliable, lack a scientific base and can even be dangerous (mixing it with mercury ??!!).

ORIVeDA Shilajit • Mumijo is the outcome of several patented purification processes featuring e.g. low temperature processing, molecular sieving and air-drying. Its moisture level is ≤ 4%, meaning you get a higher quantity of the pure material in your hands - you don't pay for water.

It is recommended to take breaks when using Shilajit • Mumijo: after 10 days of use a 7-day break is advised. An adult needs only 0.2 grams daily; meaning 25 grams will cover ± 6 months. These dosing recommendations are based on the work of the reknowned professor Shakirov, who spend most of his life researching the properties of Shilajit • Mumijo. An extensive instruction leaflet is included with every order.

Natural Shilajit • Mumijo can have a fulvic acid percentage in the range of 7 to 17%. Shilajit with a level below 7% is not allowed to be sold as being 'Mumijo' (the Russian name of Shilajit) in Russia; it is considered to be inferior quality, therapeutically not better than consuming e.g. dried and powdered peat.

Higher levels mean the product is a either a 100% fabricated product or the outcome of severe processing. It will be lacking the synergy only found in natural Shilajit, and might have nasty side effects. Natural Shilajit is a balanced all-natural, highly complex combination of dozens of macro- and micro elements, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, plant sterols, fulvic acid and humic acid. It is used both internally (in general after dissolving it in water) and externally (dissolving it in body lotion or cream is seen often in Russia).

Processing Shilajit • Mumijo (e.g. when turning it into tablets, powder, tinctures) involves heat and adding stabilizers, additives etc, and probably involves the use of metal equipment, which means the natural composition of Mumijo • Shilajit (and the resulting synergy) is affected, many of the amino acids and enzymes will be destroyed (because of the heat) and several other components will oxidize and change properties (by getting in touch with metal).

You might have noticed that most marketing (in particular for 'exotic' dieatary supplements such as what we sell) is only targeting your emotions and is hardly using verifiable facts. ORIVeDA's quality claims are all based on verifiable facts. Please have a look at the research section of our website, where we have collected quite a few research publications about Mumijo • Shilajit). Also have a look at our FAQ and at this background-page.

Even more rare than Black Mumijo is the white version, known in Russia as 'Stone Oil', 'The White Stone of Immortality'. We have a very limited supply !

The main difference with Black Mumijo is the lack of organic components. Stone Oil is purely inorganic, and according to research** contains at least 49 micro-elements (half of the Mendeleev periodic table) including traces of gold, silver and platinum.

Background:

This brittle mineral compostition is found mostly in the clefts and cracks of mountains and rocks. It is collected in the Eastern and Western Sayan Mountains and other mountain ranges of Eastern Siberia, Mongolia, and China.

In Burma it is called 'Chao-Tui' (The Blood of Mountains); in Mongolia and Tibet - 'Brakshun' or 'Brag-Shun' (The juice of rocks). In Chinese mythology Stone Oil is called 'The Food of Immortals'. The medicinal properties have been known for a while now and it is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Apart from that it is widely used in folk medicine in Eastern Siberia, Mongolia, Tibet and Burma for treating inflammations, bleedings, burns, digestive tract problems and broken bones. It is also used to treat cancer. Stone Oil is found in different colors, ranging from from dark-green to white, depending on the composition. It dissolves quite well in water (leaving only little residue) and moderately well in dimethylsulfoxide and an isotonic solution of natrium-chloride. It's weakly soluble in alcohol, ether and glycerin.

All orders include a 4-page leaflet with Stone Oil recipes as used in folk medicine.

Clinical usage of Stone Oil

Clinical trials showed impressive results. In one of the regional Siberian hospitals (in a surgical wing), a group of 12 patients with very complicated cases of broken tubular bones (including damaged nerves and arterial tissue) was testing Stone Oil. Each patient was taking the Stone Oil solution 3 times a day. Pretty soon x-rays proved that all patients without exception showed massive growth of bone tissue. All of them left the hospital 3 weeks earlier that the control group which was treated using conventional methods. No side-effects were noted.

There are good clinical results in treating ulcers with Stone Oil. Irrigation of the ulcer shows healing in 6-16 days instead of 40 (there is a patent pending from A.V. Ramenkov – ex-USSR Oncological Research Center, Academy of Medical Science, Alma-Ata Medical University). Another patent request from the same research center was made regarding the treatment of pleurisy. Furthermore, there is information about positive effects on heart conditions, inflammations and stomach and duodenal ulcers.

Stone Oil is not only a remedy but also a very powerful prophylactic with high adaptogenic properties.

Stone Oil is diluted in cooked water of room temperature and then taken orally. The basic solution (prophylactic usage) is 1 gram per liter of water. Six grams are enough for a month of daily use - 1 glass (200 ml) per day.

**A spectrum analysis of Stone Oil run at the Chemical Science Research Institute of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan showed 49 micro elements.

The 'Golden Root' as Rhodiola Rosea is called sometimes is one of those powerful 'adaptogenics'. Many R.rosea extracts (capsules, tablets, tictures) are available in health stores, but these have been proven to be inferior to the real thing; the dried root of a non-cultivated, wild herb from the Altai highlands, like what we are offering here.

Many scientific studies were undertaken since the early 50s (in particular in the former USSR) to test the reputation this plant built over many centuries. As a result, R.rosea preparations became incorporated into the official medicine by 1969 and are now part of the Russian (and several other) Pharmacopoeia.

The existing reputation was confirmed. The active ingredients are rosavin, rosarin and rosin, but in particular salidroside and rosiridin. Commercial extracts are often mixed with other plant species containing similar, but not identical components. The amounts were always considerably lower than in reference plant material, again proving the lower quality of the derivatives.

R.rosea is currently being cultivated due to its popularity as a healing herb, but research has shown that the cultivated plants do not contain the same active components and in a very different ratio.

Cordyceps - properties

Click the links below for brief descriptions of Cordyceps' properties*. For an extensive background covering many human trials check this link.

  • • Improves physical performance and endurance

Clinical trials and other research proved that CS increased the oxygen intake ability of red blood cells. This improves physical performance, reduces fatigue and oxidative stress and increases respiratory capacity.

This makes CS a very good choice for the elderly (it is very popular in SE-Asia among older people, as it improves their quality of life significantly) and athletes. The Chinese athletes breaking several world records in 1993 mentioned CS-4 use as an important contribution to this success.
  • • Stimulates the libido of both men and women

A traditional belief that has been confirmed in both animal and clinical tests. Apart from this an increased synthesis of 17-OH corticosteroids and 17-ketosteroids and a massive reduction in the production of abnormal spermatozoa was found. During a toxicity test with rabbits an increase was found in the size of the testicles together with an significant increase in sperm count. The effect appears to be dose-dependant.
  • • Lowers cholesterol and has several other cardiovascular benefits

After 30 days of treatment triglycerides and the total cholesterol level was significantly lower. The production of HDL cholesterol (= good cholesterol) increased ± 30% after treatment with CS-4. This is very interesting, as high HDL levels reduce the risk for heart diseases by e.g. removing LDL (= bad) cholesterol from where it doesn't belong. For more info, check this link.

Clinical trials showed a major improvement of ECG and clinical symptoms in patients with ischemic heart diseases or chronic heart failures and a decrease of anoxia of the heart. Blood/blood plasma viscosity was reduced. Heart arrhythmia's improved (confirmed by ECG). CS improves the blood circulation to essential organs, decreases platelet aggregation and has an anti-thrombotic and blood thinning effect because of the presence of adenosine.

Please notice that the amount of adenosine is low in a natural product such as Cordyceps.
  • • Improves and protects the kidney functions

A series of clinical trials confirmed the protective role of CS against kidney toxicity associated with amino glycoside antibiotics (kanamycin, amikacin, gentamicin) and cyclosporin A.

In general it improves the kidney functions in people with renal dysfunction and an increase in SOD (anti-oxidant function) has been reported.
  • • Beneficial in case of respiratory problems

Another traditional use that has been confirmed by both research and clinical trials. Patients with chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma or pulmonary heart disease will often benefit from CS use; the lung function improves.
  • • Beneficial in case of liver problems

CS induced a major reduction of the hepatitis-B viral load. In some patients with hepatitis-B and patients with post-hepatitis cirrhosis turbidity blood tests returned to normal. Improvement was also seen in patients with post-schistosomiasis cirrhosis.
  • • Anti-cancer adjuvant, improves the immune function

CS was found to improve tolerance to radiation and chemo therapy, by lowering or neutralizing the side effects of these therapies.

CS use will e.g. increase the production of interferon. Compared with other medicinal mushrooms CS is not outstanding as an immune modulator.
  • • No side effects and maximum safety, some contra indications

In all the literature (and this is a lot!) no side effects or any signs of toxicity were reported. Even in very high doses (10 grams p/kg of body weight, during several months) no differences in heart rate, temperature, metabolism and general physical condition were found.

During a toxicity test with rabbits an increase was found in the size of the testicles together with an significant increase in sperm count.
People using blood thinners and/or anti-thrombotic medication should be aware that Cordyceps contains some adenosine. Adenosine has a blood-thinning effect, and the combination with this type of medication might be overdoing it and can cause unforeseen effects. When using CS in a situation like this, do monitor the effects closely and inform your doctor.
CS is increasing the production of testosteron (by directly affecting the Leydig cells), which might make it less suitable for men with hormone-related prostate cancer. Do consult your doctor in this case if you plan to use CS.

Lion's Mane - properties

Click the links below for brief descriptions of the core properties of Lion's mane*.

  • • Potential for Immunomodulation

Almost all mushroom extracts on the market are promoted as immunomodulating agents and there is considerable research-based evidence to support this claim. The bio-active compounds thought to be responsible for this property are part of the polysaccharide fraction; the (1>3)(1>6)beta-D-glucans.

ORIVeDA Lion's Mane contains over 15% of these glucans (confirmed by an independant lab report, available on request).

Auto-immune disorders like allergies and rheumatic arthritis can be affected in a positive way, by normalising the immune response that caused them. Anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial effects are also properties of a well-functioning immune system.
  • • Potential for Anti-Gastritis and Anti-Ulcer effects

Traditionally Lion's Mane was used to treat peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis.

Most people are carriers of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria in their stomach. This bacteria is mostly harmless until a compromised immune system allows it to cause inflammations, which in due time can lead to peptic ulcers. By normalizing the immune function Lion's Mane can help to prevent these ulcers, and its anti-inflammatory properties can help to cure them. This traditional usage has been tested in vivo and in vitro and the effect was confirmed.

Ulcers that are caused by damaged mucosal layers in the gastro-intestinal tract can also benefit from Lion's Mane.

We quote from a recent research study: "The aqueous extract of H. erinaceus protected gastric mucosa against ethanol-induced injury. The protection was shown to be dose dependent [...] protection was significant at the maximum dosage at 400mg/kg."

The full article can be read here.
  • • Potential Anti-Diabetic effects

There are indications that polysaccharide-rich mushroom extracts can be benificial for diabetics.

We quote from a recent research article (in vivo research): "[Administration of a Lion's Mane hot water extract for 28 days] resulted in a significant decrease in serum glucose level and a significant rise in serum insulin level. [The] treatment attenuated lipid disorders."

The full article can be read here.
  • • Improving cognitive functions and stimulating the Nerve Growth Factor

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a secreted protein that is important for the growth, maintenance, survival and regeneration of nerve cells, and is considered critical for their survival. Without it, these nerve cells / neurons will die, causing both cognitive and motoric problems. The discovery of the NGF was in the 1950s, and the scientists responsible received the Nobel Prize in 1986 for this, when the importance of the NGF was finally aknowlegded. NGF prevents or reduces the degeneration of nerve cells such as caused by neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's).

Lion's Mane was found to contain a class of compounds that stimulate the production of NGF, indirectly stimulating nerves to regrow. These compounds, called Hericenones (in the fruiting body) and Erinacines (in the mycelium), are so far the only active substances found in natural products that can induce the production of the NGF. These bioactives therefore might have great potential for -indirectly- repairing neurological damage, improving intelligence (cognition) and reflexes and, even more significant, preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

We quote from a recent clinical trial (duration: 16 weeks) performed with 50- to 80-year-old Japanese men and women diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment: [...] At weeks 8, 12 and 16 of the trial, the [Lion's Mane] group showed significantly increased scores on the cognitive function scale compared with the placebo group. The [Lion's Mane] group's scores increased with the duration of intake.[...] The results obtained in this study suggest that [Lion's Mane] is effective in improving mild cognitive impairment."

  • • Potential effects on menopausal problems, depression, anxiety

The NGF inducing bioactives in Lion's Mane also appears to work on other areas of the brain, including areas that are related to Rett syndrome and bipolar disorder. Menopausal problems also include a mental element. Stress and/or anxiety are usually a precipitating factor in all of these and might negatively affect the levels of NGF.

We quote from a recent clinical trial (2010; duration: 4 weeks) performed with 30 women in the menopausal age: [...] "Concentration", "irritating" and "anxious" tended to be lower than the placebo group. Our results show that HE intake has the possibility to reduce depression and anxiety and these results suggest a different mechanism from NGF-enhancing action of H. erinaceus.[...]".

  • • Side effects, contra-indications

There are no known side effects.

However, just like with other medicinal mushrooms, because Lion's Mane has immune-balancing properties, it should not be used together with immune-suppressants, like those prescribed after a transplant.

The blood sugar lowering effects can cause fatigue in those that are highly susceptible. In general these people are also very susceptible to e.g. caffeine and alcohol, or are diabetics. Taking the extract together with a sugar containing liquid can neutralise this effect.

  • • Why should I use these products ? What about all those medicines ?

The existing medical knowledge is vast and tremendously powerful. Despite that, it does not have the answer to everything. It also creates problems while solving other problems (side effects), in part due to the symptom-fighting nature of many medicines.

The -chemical- balance of the body gets disturbed, which can cause new problems. Every doctor can confirm it: once you start using medicines it often leads to using even more medicines.

Supplements such as our mushroom extracts (often referred to as ‘CAM’ - complementary alternative medicine) are actually triggering the body’s own ability to fight diseases and pathogens, which is a more natural -holistic- approach. There are in general no side effects.

Apart from that, more and more viruses and other pathogenic organisms have become resistant against the existing antibiotics. Causing doctors to prescribe more and more powerful cures like prednisone or broad-spectrum antibiotics for what often is only a 'simple' ailment. This is taxing on the liver, disturbs the chemical balance in the body and can lead to building-up a tolerance for specific medication. Meaning it might not work the next time you need it.

However, supplements are also not the answer to everything. We are convinced that a combination of regular medicine and supplements such as ours is often way more powerful and beneficial than using just one of those.

  • • Why do I need immune support ?

Improving and maintaining your immune system is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. A layman's introduction to how our immune system works you can read here.

    First, some facts:

    - Research has shown that stress can have a negative effect on the immune system.
    - The immune function declines when we age; this already starts around our 35th birthday.

    Some examples:

    • "Ulcers are caused by stress" was an accepted concept for decades. Now we know ulcers are in general caused by the Helicobacter Pylori, a nasty bacteria most people carry with them without knowing it. Due to stress the immune function might be affected and the bacteria is no longer kept at bay. An ulcer can develop and, according to some experts, even stomach cancer might develop in due time.

    • The change of seasons is a stress-factor for many. When temperatures drop people do get the flu, catch a cold, develop e.g. seasonal eczema, etc. This is all caused by an unbalanced, weakened immune function, and not just because you forgot your hat or scarf.

    • People with an urban life-style (poor quality of sleep and food, a more polluted environment, mental stressors, etc) are according to statistics in general less healthy.

    • It is a fact that already at the age of 35 our immune system starts getting sloppy, and after 50 there is a steady and strong decline of our immune function. Biologically speaking, we're supposed to make room for the next generation at that age. This is a key cause of many old-age related diseases. Combined with other stressors (and in general we cannot take our pick - these just happen) it is obvious this can have a lasting negative effect on the quality of life.

    • Medical treatments can have a negative effect on the immune function. The best examples are probably chemo and radiation therapy, both of which can destroy our immune system completely. By using specific immune boosters doctors are trying compensate, but unpleasant side effects do happen and it is difficult to achieve the desired effect. Secondary infections are very common. This can be called a 'chemical stressor'.

This is where mushroom extracts are excelling. They normalize the immune function without side effects. In other words, they can often completely compensate the negative effects stress (of whatever nature) and age can have on our health and well-being, by restoring the balance.

This property is called 'adaptogenic'. For an in-depth explanation, see the next FAQ, below.

  • •  What is that: 'adaptogenic' ?

With a few exceptions, we are only selling so-called 'adaptogens'. These are without doubt the most powerful of all natural healers. They tune and balance the body as a whole, instead of dealing with isolated events and symptoms.

    • - An adaptogen is non-toxic and non-habit forming.
    • - An adaptogen aids in normalization of the body chemistries.
    • - An adaptogen increases your body's ability to cope with physical stress, emotional stress, stress-related imbalances and external stressors such as an urban life-style, environmental pollution and so on.
    • - An adaptogen works in a synergistic manner stimulating your body's own ability to fight off illness before it sets in, in direct contrast to modern drugs which attack 'specific' disease symptoms after you are thoroughly sick.

They do not work in a static way like most pharmaceuticals, but are dynamic, only getting into gear when it is needed and only to the extent that is needed. In the core they help us to adapt to the dynamics of our environment.

These adaptogenic properties (like immune balancing) have been acknowledged but are still not fully understood by science. Please have a look at our research-section , where you'll find a large collection of scientific publications about this and related subject matter.

  • • Have the claims made been confirmed by research ?

Yes.During the past decades a tremendous amount of research was undertaken to verify the claims made by herbalists and traditional systems, like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In general, the outcome was very positve or promising, at least. No wonder - if it wouldn't work at all, people would have stopped using it centuries ago.

There is a special journal dedicated to the mushrooms, e.g.: International Journal for Medicinal Mushrooms.

Our website has a section dedicated to research - it has a tremendous amount of downloadable publications.
All of these and many more can also be found on the largest scientific database in existance, PubMed.

Herbal medicine is as old as humanity itself. Medicinal-philosophical systems have been developed like the Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, both 1000s of years old, each with its own point of view, the core of which is restoring the balance between the body's elements.

Then there is pure folk medicine, in general based on simple trial and error, often after observing animals and their behaviour when sick or wounded. Medicinal herbs and mushrooms are at the core of all these approaches.

Modern western medicine as we know it today started about 150 years ago. The first drugs were actually herbal-based and the break-through antibiotics ( like penicilline ) are all based on fungi and mushrooms. The same is true for statins and several chemo-therapeutic agents. And transplants wouldn't be possible without the fungal based cyclosporin. Need we say more ?

  • • What are the side effects of these natural products ?

Our mushrooms extracts have no side effects and can be used safely by everyone. However, immuno-modulating substances should be used with extreme care or avoided completely in organ-transplant patients utilizing immuno-suppressive agents. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also be cautious, as no research has been done on the effect of adaptogenic mushrooms on their situation. Better to stay on the safe side and refrain from using it. For additional details see the page dedicated to each mushroom.

Our herbs in general have no side effects either, unless you happen to be one of those few that are allergic to a specific plant or component of a plant. Please read the leaflet that is included with every order for details and the product-page.

As for Shilajit • Mumijo, there are no known side effects, but there are some contradicting reports about using it when you have kidney stones or when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some sources state it has a positive effect in those cases, whereas others say exactly the opposite. To be on the safe side, we recommend to be cautious in these instances and not to take Mumijo internally. Do not use Mumijo together with alcohol, it will kill a lot of its healing potential.

  • • Are your products safe ?

Our mushrooms are processed in a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical factory, fully certified according to ISO9001:2008; ISO 22000:2005, GMP for pharmaceutical products, and HACCP. These are the most strict international standards. Also check the mushroom section of these FAQ for additional info. On top of that, our products are tested in independant 3rd party labs. The test-results -CoA's- are available on request, in line with our policy of transparency.

Our herbs are collected on the Plateau Lago-Naki and in the Altai mountains. These are remote and mostly uninhabited areas. The selection and processing of our herbs is done by a trained and certified pharmacologist, specializing in phytotherapy.

Shilajit • Mumijo is a rare natural product, found between 1000-5000 m above sea level in remote mountain areas. The majority of Shilajit being offered for sale currently is either fake or contains dangerously high levels of e.g. aluminium, heavy metals or fungal contamination. In Canada the worlds biggest supplier of Shilajit (the Indian Dabur) has been banned because their Shilajit was toxic (way too much lead was present).

We are the only sellers of Shilajit • Mumijo outside of Russia with a safety certificate issued by the Russian Federal authorities.
Levels of heavy metals, aluminium and microbial and fungal contamination are all being analysed and have to be in compliance with GOST-standards (comparable to FDA / WHO standards). It is perfectly safe to use, both internally and externally.

  • • Which mushroom is the best option for me ?

Medicinal mushrooms seem like small miracles - their therapeutic properties seem to cover almost the full spectrum of human health and well-being. And this is not exaggerated. The majority of antibiotics, several chemo-therapeutic agents, most anti-cholesterol medication (statins) and some anti-HIV medication are based on fungi. Cyclosporin, a drug without which organ transplants would be impossible, is derived from a fungus as well. And so on.

In fact, most mushrooms have only been researched for a small number of therapeutic applications. The chart below gives an indication of the existing research results of the therapeutic properties that were investigated so far.

Please take notice: 'immune balancing' covers a lot of health problems, including many allergies and auto-immune related diseases. These have not been listed separately. This overview is also not complete - we will update it and refine it when more data becomes available.

Be aware of the fact that if a property is left blank for a particular mushroom this only means that this property so far has not been investigated in depth.

These results have all been achieved with extracted mushroom products (extraction using e.g. hot water, ethanol, methanol, fermentation or combinations of these) - they are not applicable to bio-mass or nonextracted, dried and powdered mushroom products or tinctures.

  • • ORIVeDA extracts: what is the difference with other suppliers?

    • We offer true dual extracted products, with a detailed breakdown of the bio-actives on the official supplement facts label. See this link for a detailed explanation of why extraction is essential for mushroom products. Also see below ‘What ratio are your mushroom extracts?’

    • Our mushroom extracts are 100% pure. Many suppliers are e.g. adding starch, dextrin or malt-dextrin (these are all non-bio-active polysaccharides) to increase the percentage of polysaccharides in their products. Also non-mushroom triterpenes and nucleosides, the major bio-actives in Reishi and Cordyceps, are often added during the production process. Rice powder is also fairly common, used to increase the weight and to prevent cakeing of the extract powder.

    • We offer the best value-for-money in the world. Google and you'll get instant confirmation. This is one of the reasons we have customers in over 65 countries.

    • Our prices are lower and the therapeutic potency is higher (read this purchasing-guideline for objective background) - again, the value for money...

Several sellers are taking advantage of consumers that do mix up price and value; but a higher price does not automatically indicate a better quality or better value. Again, read this guideline and you will never be fooled again.

We've seen e.g. Chaga products being sold for over $ 3 per capsule, with a beta-glucan percentage of barely 4% and zero betulinic acid. Our Chaga extract has 18-30% of beta-glucans (meaning: over 39% of polysaccharides are beta-glucans) and 2 - 2.5 % of betulinic acid. The price per capsule is ± $ 0.36.

    • No other producer can rightfully claim an identical or better percentage of actives. The capsules and the clear indication of what they contain on the supplement facts label make administration very efficient. Our Certificates of Analysis are available on request, so it is easy to verify all quality and potency claims we make. We have the most detailed supplement-facts labels in the industry; nothing is kept in the dark.

    • As said, we have unmatched levels of bioactives in our extracts, but we can also guarantee the bio-availability of these bio-actives: 100%. This is due to the fact that our supplier is a combination of a pharmaceutical production- and mushroom research-center, where extracts for injections and i.v. administration are also being produced. These extracts require a purity level of at least 99%.

    • Our extracts are the only ones on the market that are fully certified according to ISO9001:2008, HACCP and GMP. (also check: ‘Why is certification important?’) This assures the safety and pharmaceutical quality of the products and the justness of their descriptions.

  • • How can a consumer be sure he's buying a therapeutically effective mushroom product ?

    • Jeff Chilton, President of Nammex, an American producer of mushroom products, recently published a White Paper (Feb. 2015) emphasizing the need for quality control and quality awareness in the niche of mushroom products. There is too much misinformation and deception going on, and it is expanding exponentially.

This not only hurts the mushroom business in the long run but it might also keep many people from trying and benefitting from the remarkable therapeutic potential a well-produced and well-processed medicinal mushroom can offer. They are losing faith after having wasted their money on therapeutically useless products (and the majority really is useless, unfortunately !).
You can download and read that White Paper here(pdf). We fully support its message, and what we write below has the same goal - to help the consumer to buy something that is therapeutically useful.

    • Make sure to choose a genuine extract. Non-extracted mushroom products (incl. bio-mass products and tinctures) have a very low bio-availability - we cannot digest them properly so the therapeutic effect is questionable. See this link for a detailed explanation. Also see below: What ratio are your mushroom extracts?

    • Verify the product claims from the website on the supplement facts label first - it is unlawful to exaggerate or lie on that label. There should be a breakdown of at least the polysaccharides (percentage) but preferably also of the beta-glucans. Not all polysaccharides are beta-glucans.

Apart from that, several producers are adding e.g. therapeutically useless starch, dextrin or malt-dextrin during the production process to increase the polysaccharide percentage. It is not required to list these seperately on the label - these are also polysaccharides. However, this can be tested easily: open a capsule and mix the extract powder with a bit of cold water to make a liquid solution. Then add a few drops of iodine. If the solution changes color (blue, red) it contains non-mushroom polysaccharides. Percentages of up to 30% are not uncommon. Rice powder is also added often to increase the weight and to prevent cakeing of the extract powder.

    • If a producer is marketing his product as a 10:1 extract (or whatever ratio) but does not specify e.g. polysaccharides/beta-glucans on the supplement facts label this might mean it's just dried and powdered mushroom, non-extracted. (also see ‘What ratio are your mushroom extracts ?’, below). Testing for polysaccharides is very easy and cheap, so logic says there's no reason to keep it vague or leave it out, unless the outcome is of course unfavourable.

    • If you want more details we recommend to ask the online seller for a Certificate of Analysis (COA), issued by the producer and/or a third party lab. Some US producers simply write their own COA, but it is obvious this has no value. A COA will list the active ingredients and the contaminants, like heavy metals. The statements should match with the product's supplement facts label.

  • • I want to make my own mushroom-based tea. Is that a good idea ?

Many people like DIY mushroom products, such as Chaga tea and Reishi tea. They assume they save money that way, have the same or even a better result as with pre-prepared products like what we sell and on top of that have a lot of fun while preparing it and sharing the results with their friends.

We can of course give you our subjective opinion about this but instead we prefer to give you the objective facts. Read and judge for yourself.

The HongKong Consumer Council put traditional Reishi tea to the test (Choice magazine #286, August 15, 2000). They compared a home-made Reishi tea with a professionally produced extract, using a laboratory.
The study team used 15 grams of dried red Reishi slices and boiled them in 300 cc (about one bowl) of water for an hour. Their lab analysis showed that the amount of polysaccharides extracted was about 0.076 grams ( ± 0.5%), so the study concluded that this boiling method by the consumer is not only labor intensive, but also much more expensive and clearly less effective than consuming ready-made industrially processed Reishi products, which can contain up to 50% polysaccharides (and which do include the beta-glucans - the main immune balancer in Reishi).

A more recent example is provided by a Canadian seller of Chaga chunks and Chaga tea. He sent his Chaga products to a local test lab to find out which one was the best for his customers in terms of therapeutic effectivity. His focus was on the anti-oxidant potential; which is associated with the polyphenolic content in Chaga.

According to the lab report the best results were achieved when boiling powdered raw Chaga for 4 hours. The amount of polyphenols was ± 30,000 GAEmg/kg. This seems like a big number until it is being compared to the ORIVeDA Chaga extract: ± 102,000 GAEmg/kg (Brunswick Labs report) which is over 3 x more.

Apart from that, the bioavailable polysaccharides were only ± 3 - 4% whereas over 50% is the standard for the ORIVeDA extract. The reason is a technical one: prolonged boiling simmering destroys the long molecular chains of the bio-active polysaccharides over time, unless it is done under high pressure. See this report for a description of the process.

And of course water extracts never contain triterpenes (these are non-water soluble) such as betulinic acid (Chaga) or ganoderic acids (Reishi) so both the synergy (between all mushroom constituents) is gone and a direct therapeutic effect of the triterpenes is not possible. On top of that DIY products made from wild-harvested mushrooms can contain contamination (heavy metals in particular) and since they are not tested these will end up in your body, where they will accumulate over time.

You can download the report from the Canadian website and verify for yourself what the outcome was. In case that link goes dead, here is an archived copy of the report.

A dual extract is the best choice for anybody looking for a product with therapeutic qualities. Check the label (ignore the website) for a breakdown of the active ingredients: polysaccharides, beta-glucans and triterpenes should all be listed, ideally.

The conclusion is obvious: making mushroom tea (DIY extraction) is time consuming, way more expensive (purchasing a raw product and boiling it for hours is costly) and it will never yield bio-actives in therapeutic quantities. But it is of course much more fun!

Our very detailed test reports are available on request

  • • I've read Cordyceps CS-4 is not the real thing ?

Some American producers are indeed stating that only they are selling the true Cordyceps Sinensis (CS), using DNA-charts to make their point. The core of their message is that CS-4 is not genuine CS, but a slightly different species.

However, even if it is true it is irrelevant, as the reputation of Cordyceps is 99% based on the CS-4 research. All major research over the past 40 years has been performed with the CS-4 strain, and those research results speak for themselves. They are excellent.

Well-cultivated CS-4 mycelia in fact contain higher and more consistent levels of the main active ingredients than the wild species, according to peer-reviewed research articles. Nucleosides like adenosine and uridine are almost absent in natural CS. The main articles about this subject matter can be found in our research section, free to download.

Oriveda is using the Cordyceps CS-4 mycelia strain and thanks to advanced bio-technological and pharmaceutical techniques the guaranteed levels of bioavailable(!) actives in our CS extract are the highest in the world.

  • • Are your mushrooms organic ?

    • Our mushrooms do not have the USDA Organic certificate, because this is only available for American products. FYI, 'organic' is not defined by law or regulations the FDA enforces. Despite the good intentions it is used mostly as an effective marketing tool. It is not a quality indicator at all in the case of medicinal mushrooms - further down we'll explain why.

    • Our Chaga is wild-harvested; such a product can never have the 'organic' label because it did not grow in a controlled environment. Our PSP-50 and our Cordyceps are being cultivated in a lab-tank, the most controlled environment imaginable; completely sterile.

    • Reishi, ABM and Lion's Mane are cultivated 'organic' in accordance with the international GACP regulations, which have been developed specifically for medicinal plants. This standard is more strict and is internationally enforced instead of only local. This certificate is also not abused as a marketing instrument by supplement and 'superfood' producers.

    • Abused, indeed. The majority of the mushroom supplement sellers using the USDA certificate as a marketing tool have only that to market - a mushroom product with the USDA stamp. An 'organically grown' mushroom can still contain significant amounts of heavy metals and microbial contamination, which mushrooms tend to accumulate from the soil and the environment.

    • As said before, it is NOT a good quality indicator for medicinal mushrooms; as it only focuses on things that should NOT be present in the product (traces of pesticides and fertilizers, e.g.) instead of focussing on the things that ARE PRESENT in the product (bioavailable bioactives, microbial and heavy metal contamination, e.g.), and which in the end determine the usability and therapeutic potency of the product.

    • We offer a full Certificate of Analysis that tells the consumer exactly what's in the product, instead of playing their emotions by emphasizing only the 'organic' aspect.

  • • Why don't you put your Certificates online ?

    • We have done so in the past, but found out certain individuals -most likely competitors- were tampering with the documents, changing the numbers and sharing them on social networks to make our products look bad and unreliable. Others replaced our name with their own, to fuel their sales. We even came across a website that was an 80% direct copy of ours, trying to sell a useless Chaga product using our specifications.

    • We offer the CoAs on request only. They are digitally watermarked, so we can always trace a potential abuser.

  • • Why is certification important?

Oriveda mushroom extracts are the only ones in the world that are fully certified. This is important, because it means that you, as a customer, have the guarantee the products are 100% safe, pure, free of dangerous substances and are described accurately, without exaggeration.

Mushrooms can be contaminated with heavy metals and pesticides, both of which they easily absorb. These contamination levels have to be listed in a so-called Certificate of Analysis (COA), that has to be presented to the authorities during e.g. the import/export process. If the product to-be-imported does not comply with the international safety standards, it will be confiscated by the authorities and destroyed.

A decade ago several problems were reported with mushroom products imported from China, the worlds biggest producer of mushrooms. Since then the import regulations became more strict and the fear of contaminated Chinese products is no longer justified. But we still recommend to always ask for a COA before buying expensive supplements, even when they are recommended by a guy in a white coat on TV - after all, it's about your health and well-being.

Oriveda extracts were produced in compliance with not just the basic GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice - a series of general principles that must be observed during manufacturing) but also HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control points - a program used in the food industry to identify potential food safety hazards) and ISO 9001:2008 (an extension of the HACCP policy).

In short, these safety standards demand extensive quality control during all phases of the production process, including pre- and post-production. Clean rooms and in-house laboratory testing facilities are required, e.g., and external auditors keep track of everything to prevent tampering or sloppiness.
Certificates of Analysis (COA) should accompany every production batch and have to show accurate and factual information about the active ingredients and the contamination levels in the product. This goes beyond a basic 'supplement facts' label.

You might find out that many sellers will refuse to show you a COA. They might even use phrases like 'it contains proprietary / confidential information' to justify this.
    This is nonsense.
The COA of a mushroom extract only shows you contamination levels and levels of active ingredients, plus the way these have been determined. Nothing to be secretive about. Unless the COA reveals contamination or insignificant levels of actives, of course.

There are also analytical labs that will produce analytical certificates on demand, according to the clients ideal COA, without actually testing the product. This is a fraudulent scheme known as 'dry labbing'. A recent episode of the NBC Dateline program (broadcasted March 18th, 2012) unveiled the fraudulent actions of Atlas Bioscience, who failed to report deadly arsenic levels in a sample, among other things. Atlas Bioscience happens to show up often in the mushroom supplement business - so if you bump into a producer showing you COA's of Atlas Bioscience to underline the quality of their products, you might want to reconsider.

Our COA's are available on request

  • • Why extracts instead of fresh or dried mushrooms ?

The term 'extract' is often used quite loosely - dried and powdered mushrooms are often also advertised as 'mushroom extract'. Hot-water extraction is the minimum that is needed to free some active ingredients from the cell-walls in which they are contained. These cells are made of chitin, an indigestible substance for humans. Most of the active components will simply pass through your body without a trace if you choose the cheap 'extracts'.

Our metabolism work too fast to break down chitin and at least 80% of people lack the enzyme chitinase in their stomachs, which is essential for digesting chitin.

Read this excellent and well-referenced explanation on the supplement-facts blog.

We are using a state-of-the-art hot-water / ethanol extraction and distillation process to get rid of the useless chitin and set all the bio-active ingredients free. The final product has a constant pharmaceutical level of quality.

  • • Why do you only sell extracts in capsules and not powder or tinctures ?

This question is asked very often.
    • Capsules make dosing much easier - you know exactly how much you take and what is in it.

    • We are selling highly concentrated extracts. A side effect of highly concentrated extracts is that they are very hygroscopic, meaning they attract and absorb moisture easily. Loose powder is difficult to keep damp-free, so if no precautions are taken (using e.g. a desiccant or some additive) the powder will soon start cakeing or develop lumps. In itself this is no problem: the therapeutic effect is not affected, but it is impossible to sell like that.

In fact, the described effect can also be called an indication of quality: extracts with a low percentage of extracted polysaccharides will stay relatively free from these problems and non-extracted mushroom powder or biomass will have none of these problems.

Alcohol tinctures are very effective with herbs, but not with mushrooms. Alcohol does not break down chitin, the main structural ingredient of fungi cells. The main bio-actives of mushrooms (beta-glucans) are water-solubles, not alcohol-solubles. Some alcohol-soluble constituents will dissolve in the alcohol, but the percentages are low. If you pay attention you'll notice mushroom tinctures never list the bio-active ingredients on their supplement facts label, because these are entirely unpredictable and in general below the level of detection. At least 99% of the tincture is just alcohol and the therapeutic potency is minimal.

"Structured' water tinctures are entirely useless - soaking mushroom powder in water for a long time ("structured water" is not a scientific term but a marketing term) will not release any water-soluble constituents. These are locked in the chitin cell walls and can only be set free by heat (hot water).

In May 2013 we did a test run with Chaga extract powder, sold in bags of 100 grams each. (Of all extracts Chaga is the least susceptible to cakeing.) Our Korean customers in particular are used to Chaga in powder form, since the sale of dietary supplements in capsule-form in Korea is prohibited. Because it worked without problems we decided to add Chaga extract powder permanently to our line-up.

  • • What ratio are your mushroom extracts: 8:1 ? 10:1?

These ratios are used by some sellers to underline the 'potency' of their products.

Using ratio's such as these as a quality indicator actually stems from herbal practice: a dried herb (± 10:1) is more potent than the fresh one in general - this is applicable even to kitchen herbs! Many Chinese producers are actually in the herbal business and added mushrooms as an extra source of income in the past years. They are also using the same processing and quality indicators for mushrooms, but this is completely wrong because mushrooms are not -structurally speaking- cellulose based (like herbs) but have a chitinous structure. Chitin needs specific processing -involving heat or enzymes/fermentation- to release the bioactives - see elsewhere in these FAQ.

Using a ratio-indicator with mushrooms is deceiving, because it only indicates a decrease in volume / weight (which one is never specified, somehow), and in itself reveals nothing about chemical compostion or bio-availability - the consumer still has no clue if the product is in fact therapeutically useful.

Mushrooms contain a lot of water, up to 90% (e.g. Agaricus blazei fruiting bodies). Drying and pulverizing them will already decrease the volume and the weight significantly; completely dry ABM powder is already meeting the 10:1 ratio; 90% water has been removed, 10% dry matter is left. But no extraction of bio-actives took place and their bio-availability is still very low.

The bottom line: a ratio-indicator in itself means nothing. This statement should be backed up by a detailed breakdown of bio-actives on the supplement facts label to have any meaning.

The only thing that is worth looking for for a consumer is the information on the supplement label (it is prohibited by law to lie or use deceiving phrasing on this label): the exact percentages of bio-actives like polysaccharides and/or beta-glucans should be there.

If not, avoid it - the therapeutic potency is probably questionable. Testing for e.g. polysaccharides is easy and cheap - so why not do it unless the outcome is not what you want ?

As an example, have a look at the image below. The most powerful extract is the dual extract (hot water/ethanol) on the right. It has twice the volume of the hot water-only extract. So volume-wise the hot water extract might be 14:1 and the dual extract only 7:1, but to draw the conclusion the 14:1 extract is the most potent one would be wrong.

A basic hot water extract (freeze dried) and a full spectrum dual extract (spray dried). The dual extract’s particle size is much smaller but the total volume is larger. Smaller particles means better absorption and solubility, which improves bio-availability and therefore therapeutic effect.

  • • Are your mushroom extracts safe ?

Our Agaricus blazei mushrooms are being cultivated in greenhouses located in a rural area, without polluting industry or traffic nearby. No pesticides are used.

Chaga cannot be cultivated without losing a lot of its properties. Our Chaga is harvested in the coldest region of Siberia (around Lake Baikal), where no industry or agriculture worth mentioning takes place, since the population density is very low. No pollution and clean groundwater. Chaga's purity can be guaranteed. Also see: Chaga, Fukushima, radioactivity…

Both Cordyceps and Coriolus PSP are grown in sterile laboratory tanks, since not the fruiting body is used, but the mycelia, the hidden 'roots' of the mushrooms which were found to contain the most potent medicinal components. This process is 100% controlled. Another benefit of this so-called 'deep layer cultivation' is that the final product will be 100% mushroom, not 50 - 60 % substrate as is the case when cultivating it on grains or rice, which is cheap and standard in e.g the US and EU.

All mushrooms are processed in a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical factory, fully certified according to ISO 9001:2008, GMP for pharmaceutical products, en HACCP. These are the most strict international standards. Also read: ‘Why is certification important?’ Our COA's wil prove the purity - available on request.

  • • What are polysaccharides and Beta-glucans ?

Polysaccharides are a type of complex carbohydrates. They contain the main active ingredients of most medicinal mushrooms and other fungi, the beta-glucans.

So, beta-glucans are a specific type of polysaccharides.

The most important ones are the (1>3)(1>6) Beta-D-glucans. According to scientific research these are responsible for the adaptogenic, immune balancing effect of medicinal mushrooms. The precise mechanism behind this is still not fully understood by science.

Mushroom beta-glucans are classified as BRM's - natural Biological Response Modifiers - meaning they can activate the natural defense mechanisms in the body when needed. So the effect is mainly indirect, which is also the reason there are no side effects as when using chemical agents, which always unbalance the body's natural chemical balance, often leading to more use of medication.

Mushroom beta-glucans should not be mixed up with beta-glucans from yeast or barley - they have a more complex structure and are a league of their own.

  • • What is the 'chromogenic complex' (related to Chaga)?

On several websites offering Chaga extract the phrase ‘Chromogenic complex’ is used as a quality marker. How to value this quality marker ?

In brief: the chromogenic complex is a concept that was used until the early 1950s to roughly determine the composition of e.g. Chaga. In the case of Chaga it was (and officially still is - Russia only) used a a quality marker. In the 1950s it was replaced by spectrografic analysis (except in Russia), which is much more precise and allows far more detailed analysis.

Scientific research in the past decades has since then revealed a lot about the bioactive ingredients of medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga. We now know that the main active ingredients are beta-glucans, terpenes, sterols, polyphenols and their derivatives.

The drawback of using the 'chromogenic complex' as a quality marker is that it reveals nothing about the chemical composition, it is far too crude for scientific use. In fact nobody knows exactly what is in it, although it is believed(!) to be mainly polyphenols.

See, as an example, the opening paragraph of this Russian journal - (Translated from Khimiko-Farmatsevticheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 44, No. 3, pp. 35 – 37, March, 2010) where the ‘chromogenic complex’ is described as ‘ a vague concept with no definition of its chemical composition’ and products and protocols based on that are described as 'severely out of date’ and ‘not respond(ing) to current requirements'.

Scientific research no longer uses ‘chromogenic complex’ as a starting point, only spectrografic analysis and other, even more advanced methods such as HPLC. After all, their goal is to find the exact bioactives responsible for a therapeutic effect, which is impossible with the old method.

We are addressing this issue more in depth in our extensive ‘Chaga - The Facts’ monograph. Have a look if you want to know additional details.

  • • Is it true Chaga can help people suffering from psoriasis ?

Yes. Psoriasis is basically an auto-immune disease. Chaga is in the core an immune-modulator.
In the early 70s a case study was performed in the USSR, investigating the effect of a traditional Chaga preparation (Befungin ®) on psoriasis. The outcome was excellent.

The article is in the PubMed database, but it is in Russian. We have translated this article into English - you can download it here.

  • • Chaga, Fukushima, radioactivity... should we worry ?

Chaga is known to absorb radioactive contamination very easily.

There are rumors being spread on the internet by an American Chaga producer stating that Siberian Chaga is contaminated with radioactivity due to the Fukushima disaster, early 2011. This company is marketing its cultivated(!) Chaga as the only reliable alternative.
We can assure you that these statements are complete nonsense. It's just marketing talk without any backup.

First of all, in Russia it is standard to test for radionuclides such as Caesium-137 and Strontium-90. (See this example of a Russian COA).

Second, most people are probably not aware of the strict EU-customs procedures during import. We were informed that American, Japanese and Canadian Chaga is currently stopped at EU customs quite often, but not Siberian Chaga. Below, we will explain how this is possible.

Third, the jetstream and ocean streams are moving away from the East Coast of Japan towards the Pacific Ocean and the US. Hawaii was e.g. hit by radiation three months after the disaster took place (over 3 times the normal radiation levels) and the American West Coast was hit shortly afterwards. In North-East China (close to East Russia) however radiation levels increased only 1/100.0000th of the normal level. And Irkutsk (source of ORIVeDA Chaga) is still 2000 miles away from those spots.

Look at the picture, below, an official depiction of the fallout deposition (computer modeling, updated and validated with environmental samples), shortly after the event happened.

Dark blue means zero deposition. Irkutsk is just visible, top left. As you can see a large part of the US and Canada has been affected badly. Based on this (and the EU customs reports) our advice is therefore to avoid Japanese, American and Canadian Chaga (and other culivated mushrooms) completely. Siberian Chaga is now more then ever the best choice of Chaga.

Apart from all that, cultivated Chaga has completely different properties than wild-harvested Chaga and therefore cannot claim any of the effects found during research. No betulin, different sterols... for further background, have a look at this article or this extensive monograph.

  • • How can I measure and administer Mumijo / Shilajit easily ?

Since Mumijo is a resinous, sticky paste it is quite difficult to manipulate and to dose accurately. ORIVeDA Shilajit • Mumijo is actually relatively hard, due to the low level of moisture. Also not easy.

We do recommend to make a 30% water solution right away - 30% Mumijo with 70% of cooled down, boiled clean water. This solution will have an unlimited shelf life, just like the raw paste.

Put the required amount of water (for 25 grams 58.5 ml) in the plastic container with Mumijo and leave it overnight. It will dissolve to a mayo-like consistency. Stir to ensure proper dissolving.

You can also freeze the Mumijo; like when preparing 50 grams. The plastic container is too small to hold 50 grams AND 117 ml of water. Freeze the Mumijo, remove the plastic container and put the frozen Mumijo in a glass jar. Add the water that is required and leave overnight.

The solution should be kept in a well-closed container at all times in a dark, cool spot, like in the refrigerator. A more extensive explanation including detailed measuring schemes is in the enclosed leaflet.

For accurate administration use a set of kitchen measuring spoons - 1/4 of a teaspoon = 1.25 ml of solution, the daily dose for an adult with a body weight of 80-90 kgs.
